About

For more than 800 years, St Mary and All Saints, Swarby has offered a place of refuge, hospitality, and worship. Today the church holds Festival Church status, with well-attended services at Harvest and Christmas.

History

The Grade II listed Church of St Mary and All Saints in Swarby blends 13th-century origins with a distinctly Victorian character. Much of its present appearance — including the nave, aisle roofs, and pews — dates from an extensive 19th-century restoration. The building traces a path from the Early English style of the 13th century, through the Decorated (14th century) and Perpendicular (15th century) periods, culminating in a major Victorian restoration in 1886–87.

  • 13th century: The earliest surviving stonework, including the three-bay north arcade, the tower arch, and a small window hidden behind the pulpit.

  • 14th century: The south arcade, with its hollow-chamfered piers, and the intricately carved south door reveals.

  • 15th century: The imposing three-stage west tower, likely funded or influenced by Vicar Richard Thoresby (1467–1507).

  • Victorian restoration: A major overhaul that rebuilt the chancel arch and south aisle, and introduced the Minton encaustic tiles and the current open timber roof.

Inside, the church holds artefacts spanning a millennium: a 1,000-year-old Anglo-Saxon grave marker, and a headless 13th-century stone figure of Christ that survived the upheavals of the Reformation. The Thomas Betson ledger stone in the north aisle commemorates a 14th-century landowner who contributed to the defence against the Spanish Armada. The Anthony Williams Monument (1681) in the chancel, with its classic 17th-century obelisk design, offers a glimpse into the life of a local gentleman farmer. Don't forget to pay your respects to Queen Victoria as you leave via the south door.
